Fiction is just that. Reality is quite otherwise, for better or for worse.
For worse has been the last week of the devastating wildfires surrounding the San Francisco Bay Area in Napa, Sonoma, and Santa Rosa -- just 60 miles north of where I live.
The devastation has been mind-numbing. Particularly when you have friends who had to leave their house in the middle of the night with only their pets and the clothes on their backs. This is not a first-world problem. This goes on all the time around the world but, because if it isn't in the USA, it never makes the news cycle here.
In fact, the GF was at a conference in Orlando last week and half the people were unaware of a little "wildfire" in California. People are wearing gas masks, fer Chrissakes, just to go outside because the smoke is so bad.
People have died. People have lost everything, their home, their livelihood, their sense of place. Time to take a moment and mourn their losses, help where you can, prevent it from happening in your home town.
Gods, I hope it never happens to you.
